I chanced up on an old edition of Dr. R. K Anand’s book ‘Guide to Child Care’ when browsing at a book fair and was amazed to find a wealth of information packed in. It is almost like Dr. Spock with Indian sensibilities.

Questions that are answered range from ‘Is there a right age to have a baby?’, ‘What can I do when my baby cries?’, ‘Can a working mother successfully breastfeed?’, ‘How helpful is a joint family in bringing up children?’ to ‘Is my child ready for toilet-training?’, ‘Are vaccines safe?’, ‘When is the right age for sex education?’ and even ‘How should we handle our teenager?’

In my attempt to find the book at a book store for a friend, I discovered that this definitive guide on pregnancy and child rearing from infancy to adolescence is in fact a best seller. The book combines knowledge of traditional Indian practices with latest medical development in child care. It even has a step by step diagram assisted guide to tie a wrapper / swaddle the baby and home cure remedies for various common ailments.

Sure, the book cannot be used as a substitute for a doctor but it is useful to turn to for answers to silly questions you may feel you don’t want to specifically call the paediatrician to ask about.

Dr. R.K. Anand’s Guide to Child Care is available at all leading book stores for Rs. 395/-.

    Priya,
The book is indeed a best seller and a very handy reference guide and highly recommended. It makes a great gift for expectant mothers as well as mothers with small children which is why it may not always be available off the shelf. Dr. Anand normally keeps a small stock at his Clinic which is opposite Charni Rd. Station.

Dr. Anand is a renowned pediatrician and he has attended to both our children from a very early age (they are now 7 & 11years). Our children have immense faith in him and we love his positive reassuring attitude. He is a wonderful human being with high morals, scruples and values (he is one of the few Doctors that will insist on giving you a receipt) and is active in social and community forums.

Thank you Brian – it’s great to hear about your personal experience with the Doctor and the information on the clinic will certainly be of assistance to many parents checking in here at mummyknowsbest.
