Guess How Much I Love You, by Sam Mc Bratney, illustrated by Anita Jeram. A lovely, gentle picture book for young children, about the stuff in life that just can’t be quantified.

A Kiss for Little Bear by Else Minarik, beautifully illustrated by the legendary Maurice Sendak. Part of the series of books for new readers from 4-8 yrs old. Evocative and beguiling, yet simple and fresh, a sheer delight to read.

Charlotte’s Web by EB White, for age 7 up. The children’s classic about friendship between the most unlikely creatures, in a gorgeous, almost-new edition with quirky illustrations. Winner of several children’s book awards.

Holes by Louis Sachar, for 10 and up. An inventive and darkly humorous tale about a young boy banished to a remote detention centre where all the inmates do is dig holes “to build character”. But there’s more to the digging than meets the eye…winner of the Newbery Medal and many other awards.

It’s Like This Cat, by Emily Cheney Neville. A young adult book for 13 and up, this Newbery Award-winning book was written in the 60’s and recounts the adventures of a teenage boy and his cat, both of whom are strong willed and lonely. Set in New York, this is a perceptive novel about growing up in a big city.
