I almost want to break out into a few halleluiahs after my recent visit to Kitab Khana. Let it not be said anymore that Mumbai moms are only subjected to workbooks, educational books and storybooks with the worst grammar on the planet anymore.
Kitab Khana is a delight of a bookstore, opened just this month at Fort. Tucked behind Flora Fountain and housed in a heritage structure with high ceilings, wooden bookcases and a magical calm, it transported me back to days of quietly browsing through books without harsh lights, blaring music and toys falling off shelves. While the overall collection is well chosen and well displayed, I made a beeline for the children’s section. It did not disappoint with its wonderfully picked selection of classics like the Beatrix Potter collection, Eric Carle, Berenstain Bears, and Richard Scarry. These nudge spaces with some of the wonderful books by Indian publishers like Tulika, Zubaan, Katha among others which are SO difficult to spot in any other bookstore. My kids promptly picked out a book and cuddled up on brightly coloured beanbags. The place even has a lovely café with delicious cupcakes and other goodies
to tuck into. I could not get enough!
Summer promises to be great there with some interesting events lined up. Details for the events are:
