p>From about the time our son was three years old until recently he believed that HSBC bank is where we get ‘sweets’ from. It was known as the ‘sweet bank’. This came from the fact that his visits to the bank have been about chatting with the staff who offered him candy while his father or I were busy getting bank work done. Slowly we started explaining the concept of money, plastic money and even how cheques work. However our process of going about it has been very hands on and not really planned.
To the rescue is the Rupaiya Paisa Series by Pratham Books which is
a collection of four books written by Mala Kumar and illustrated by Deepa Balsavar. These books are ideal for children who have started reading but even smaller kids can benefit from having the concepts explained to them by a parent or older reader. Concepts like earning, saving, investments, shares, taxes and even entrepreneurship are touched upon through the books – The World of Money!; How Money Travels!; The Money Managers; and Be Wise with Money. Each concept is explained using an anecdote and examples of interactions with family, friends and vendors that involve money along with illustrations that make the experience stimulating for the child.
The books are available in English, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi,
Telegu, Tamil, Urdu, Gujarati, Punjabi, Bengali and Oriya. This series is superb to help unravel the seemingly mysterious world of money to the young reader
and is also a great resource for parents like me who are happy with the guidance offered in terms of natural progression for the explanations on money matters.
